Pathways Forum #16 : Radical Transformations – Reading List

This reading list is associated to the 16th Pathways Forum called « Radical Transformations: What are they and how to acheive them? ». In this webinar, we discussed with Katharina Biely, Paul Cukierman and Silja Zimmerman how socio-ecological transition studies can help redefine the ways societies interact with the natural world to enable meaningful and radical transformations. In this forum, we therefore explored how research can be transformative two different streams. The first is the descriptive-analytical stream, which moves from describing and understanding socio-ecological systems and sustainability challenges to co-developing research projects that strengthens actors’ agency and capacity to act. The second stream is the informing-participating stream, where the research project can either inform public debate and policies or directly participate in transformative processes. Accordingly, our speakers provided examples from their own work, demonstrating how their research fits into this vision of transformative change.

With this reading list, we wish to provide resources that can help to gain a deeper understanding of socio-ecological transformations and how these transition research projects can challenge existing structures and promote innovative pathways for sustainability. The materials explore the complexities of transformation, highlight interdisciplinary perspectives, and showcase how different actors can collaborate to foster systemic change. They cover both the theoretical foundations and practical applications of socio-ecological transition research. The different ressources include contributions from the speakers as well as other researchers work.
