When Western meets Indigenous in Sustainability Science is a unique two-part webinar co-organized with the Ocean Knowledge Action Network and the Tapei Hub of Future Earth. Part 1 asks the question: What do scientists need to know before and when working in and with Indigenous communities? Reflections were spotlighted from the perspective of those with direct experience of living or working with Indigenous communities. Valelia Muni Toki from IRD Institut de recherche pour le développement, Teriitutea Quesnot of the Université de Bretagne Occidentale and Futuru C.L. Tsai of the National Taitung University gave insights on how ethically engage with Indigenous knowledge holders and develop reciprocal relationships with these communities in ways that do not perpetuate extractive, colonial frameworks.
