The Pathways Initiative – 2024 Annual Report

The challenges we are navigating demand reflection and active engagement from every sector, discipline, and community. In confronting these complex issues, the importance of transcending disciplinary, societal and geographical boundaries has never been clearer.

In our work this year, we sought to deepen our connections with the sustainability science community and broaden the reach of our activities. We started by launching a new website designed to amplify the visibility and accessibility of the Pathways community’s work. Throughout the year, we consolidated our key activities—such as the Pathways Forum, Autumn School, and Communication Grants—while experimenting with innovative formats.

One of the year’s achievements was fostering bottom-up contributions to the French Sustainability Science Conference. By opening a call for sessions, we not only attracted researchers with a variety of disciplinary backgrounds, but also a diverse range of non-academic actors from sectors such as policy, civil society, and the arts, who led or co-led 12 out of the 20 parallel sessions at the event.

In order to reach out to and support new early career researcher communities, we worked with partners from various French-speaking countries, including in francophone Africa and North America, at building a new Pathways Training program, which will kick off in 2025. Additionally, we increased our efforts to attract diverse participants to the Pathways Autumn School, resulting in a cohort that represented 23 nationalities from across the world.

As we look back on a year marked by growing collaborations and transformative encounters, we are happy to share the highlights and accomplishments that defined 2024. This report offers an overview of our efforts and sets the stage for the opportunities that await in the year ahead.
